objective
The objective of this project was to create a still-image animation of a chosen letter from the alphabet. The focus of the project was steered toward a specific process relating to RISO printing.
process
In this animation, I aimed to recreate the familiar interplay of light and water, inspired by the shimmering effect of light on moving surfaces. Taking an analog approach, I used a hole puncher to create thirteen impressions of the letter "p" on paper. I then photographed light shining through them, and Riso printed the images in blue and charcoal ink. These frames were assembled in Premiere Pro to create the final animation.
solution
Though I intended to reflect a natural phenomenon, the result leaned more digital. The perfect circular cut-outs, Riso texture, and still-image animation gave it a technological aesthetic. This shift taught me how much the process can shape a design’s feel. Rather than mimicking nature, the work ended up reflecting how light behaves in digital contexts—an unexpected but rewarding outcome.
